The ESD 189 Traffic Safety Education course, which takes place through the Snohomish School District, is approved by the Washington State Office of the superintendent of Public Instruction and includes both classroom and behind-the-wheel experience. The goal and purpose of the course is to help the new driver become precise, efficient, knowledgeable and responsible. They provide the opportunity for all students to gain knowledge about the driving task, the rules of the road, driver responsibilities and how to make reduced-risk decisions while driving. Students practice basic driving skills and defensive driving strategies in a variety of traffic situations. In addition, they are expected to practice between driving sessions with a licensed driver who has at least five years of driving experience.
ESD 189 offers a quality traffic safety education program featuring highly trained and skilled teachers. The teachers are committed to providing a good defensive driving course geared to meet the needs of all students. The classes are scheduled over eight or more school weeks (except for the 5 week summer quarter) so the students have time to learn the information and practice the skills needed to be safe drivers. The fee also includes the cost of the DOL driving test which will be administered on site.
Traffic Education Fee - $485.00
Extra charge for written test retakes - $25.00
Extra charge for driving retakes - $45.00
Registration forms are available approximately two weeks before the starting date of each session in the GPHS main office or posted on the GPHS webpage. There is no reduced fee or scholarships for low-income students because Washington State no longer provides funding for traffic education programs. Due to overwhelming demand, enrollment in the Glacier Peak program will now be decided based on a lottery system. On the first day of registration, a drawing will be held at the end of the day for all applications submitted in the morning. Full tuition is due when placement has been confirmed.
If a student misses a drive session without a 24 hour advance notice, or does not bring his/her permit to class and cannot drive, he/she may be charged an additional $50 fee to make up the missed session. Additional driving sessions (outside of the usual instruction time) are available for $50 an hour.
Students 15 years or older may enroll. Each student will be issued a waiver to receive a learner’s permit without taking the DOL written exam. The $485 fee is due, along with the completed registration papers, to the bookkeeper in the GPHS Main office by the registration dead line for each quarter. There are new registration forms for each quarter.
During the school year, there are two classroom sessions and one on-street driving day each week. Classes are held at GPHS from 2:45-4:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Driving days will be chosen the first day of class and be held after school or on Saturdays. The summer driving class is taught during five weeks with the classes meeting three days each week for the classroom sessions and 2 days a week for the driving sessions.
